Under a Starry Sky represents a period of great tribulation for the author. After a five-week intensive study of creative writing, a newer, more troubled take on life is found beneath the grand language and Roman flourish of poetry and short fiction. Almost every piece carries with it the theme of the stars or the sky, and the imagery thereof is used to discuss more mature topics. Themes like faith, hope, and redemption are underscored by the darker tones of addiction, suffering, and despair. Love as a tool of suffering and redemption is explored in depth, since life isn't a fairy tale.
